Homemade ‘Bar harness’, Brag time

Okay, I just have to share this wonderful little device that my mom made.  Let me preface by saying that our new house is being built in a neighborhood where only certain open fence styles are allowed.  That means the classic wrought iron/aluminum or wood picket.  Unfortunately those style fences do nothing to contain our little 5 lb Chihuahua!  So we began searching for an easy, inexpensive way to keep our little dog safely behind bars.

That’s when we discovered the “Safe Behind Bars” harness at dog-gamutt.com.  I just knew this was the perfect solution to our problem.  I was ready to order right away since the rental we were staying in while our house was built has a wood picket fence.  And that fence was no match for our cheeky, little Chihuahua who had no trouble slipping right through the pickets.  Weeks passed with no response to my calls or emails about ordering one of the Safe Behind Bars harnesses.  I was never able to order one of their harnesses, so I cannot comment on the form, function or quality of their harnesses specifically.  However, their customer service was nonexistent so I cannot recommend them which is such a shame.  I had so looked forward to trying their product and writing a review since I could not find any reviews for it outside of their website.  And I always take product reviews posted on a businesses website with a grain of salt.  It’s a great concept by those at Dog-Gamutt, but useless if people cannot actually purchase it.

Anyway, I shared my disappointment about the Safe Behind Bars harness with my mother.  Her being the inventive and crafty person that she is, she set out to not only try to replicate what I call the “bar harness” that Dog-Gamutt makes, but she went a step further and improved upon it.  She went through several “prototypes” in the process but in the end came up with a very cool harness that has a removable bar!  So I am not limited to only using it in the yard to keep my small dog contained.  I can also quickly and easily remove the bar so as to use it like a normal harness for walks around the neighborhood.  She did such an amazing job I just have to brag and show off her labor of love.

Comfortable & lightweight, our Chi has full range of motion.

Then it was time to put it to the ultimate test.  I stepped outside the fence and called our little dog to come to me.  I had such a good laugh when he tried to go through the pickets and could not figure out why he couldn’t get through!

Unsuccessful attempt to go through a picket fence.

Awesome job, Mom, and wonderful improvement!  As it turns out, I’m glad we were unable to purchase the Safe Behind Bars harness.  Thanks to my talented mother, we ended up with something even better!
