This
week we continued on in Genesis, focusing on the story of Abraham and his son,
Isaac. Other objectives for the week
included the letter C, the square shape, and the color brown.
Since we are in our first week of Lent, we began
the week on a little Lent side project. We made a crown of thorns as our Lenten
“wreath”. Next we placed sand inside the
crown of thorns to remind us of the forty days Jesus spent fasting in the
desert. Last, we placed a white pillar
candle in the center as a sign of the hope we have to look forward at
Easter. (The white pillar candle will
remain unlit throughout Lent and will later become our Paschal candle at
Easter.)

Isa’s
next project involved making a cotton letter C on brown paper, this was a
modified Little Hands to Heaven activity.

Day
two started off with a Little Hands to Heaven activity which involved coloring
Abraham’s tent and painting stars in the sky.
This project stems from God’s promise to Abraham that his descendants
would be as numerous as the stars in the sky.

Next
we did some more work with squares. Gluing
various color and size squares, something I just made up myself to spend more
time on the square shape. I thought it’d
be easier to find squares in the home but aside from all the boxes from our
move into the temporary rental home, square shapes were surprisingly difficult
to find in our normal day to day setting.
Rectangles abound, squares…not so much.
A weird, little discovery for me as I searched high and low for more
than 2 square shaped household examples that morning.

We finished
up the day with two Learn and Grow activities that I combined into one
sitting. Painting brown onto cows, and
on one of the cows adding painted legs.
I modified the legless cow activity slightly since I didn’t have wooden
clothespins. Instead, we painted and
glued popsicle sticks for the cow’s legs.

Day
three began with a modified Learn and Grow activity. Isa glued C-shaped macaroni onto a brown
letter C.

After
that, we continued on with another Learn and Grow activity. This one involved painting a small carton red
as a ‘barn’ for cows.

No
sooner did she finish painting the barn when she literally fell asleep in her
chair…sitting up and paintbrush in hand!
Poor girl was tired from so much playing and learning. Mom had to wash the paint off her hands
before laying her down for a nap, but she went right back to sleep as soon as
she was put down.
Week 4 was our busiest week yet, jam packed with loads of activities and learning. We spent a great deal of time outside playing since the weather was perfect this week, cool and sunny every day. And in addition to introducing new things we also spent time reviewing things introduced in the previous weeks. We took Friday off as a just have fun day, she earned it!
Until next week...
