Well, we’ve got our first two weeks of the new school year under our belts. Due to Mr X’s young age I wondered if he would be participating in his first year of preschool this year or next. Seeing as he’s even younger than Isa was when she started preschool last year I expected him to really be sitting this year out to an extent. To my pleasant surprise he’s been totally involved and learning right alongside Isa these past two weeks and is doing quite well for how young he is.
Now let me back up just a little bit here and give a more in depth look at our first two weeks of preschool.
As a fitting end to summer, we spent an evening at the beach as a family. Naturally, the kids had tons of fun playing in the surf and sand. The tide was going out which left a plethora of little pools in the sand. They were perfect for the kids to play in safely. It is such a blessing to watch the sheer joy that something so simple, that we often take for granted, offers the children.

We kicked off our new school year with a culinary activity. Mima had purchased a Disney Frozen cupcake making kit for Miss Isa to make. Little Miss thoroughly enjoyed the entire process of making her cupcakes from the ingredient preparation to mixing to decorating and finally, eating! Of course she let mom help out with some aspects of the cupcake preparation.
Our first week included a couple of ‘field trips’. First we took a family trip over to Boone Hall Plantation. The kids got to see horses in the stables which I think was Isa’s favorite part. We also got to see lots of butterflies in the butterfly garden. In addition to that, we went on a House tour, a Plantation Coach tour, and explored the slave cabins.

The other field trip during our first week back in school involved a visit to the North Charleston Fire Museum. The museum has an impressive collection of fire engines dating all the way back to the 1780’s, wow! The museum also houses a number of interactive exhibits great for people of all ages. I think we all agreed that the best part was the interactive “Are You an Escape Artist?” show complete with vibrating seats, flashing lights and spraying water! The kids also got their very own little fire helmets at the end of their visit.
Back in the classroom *ahem*, at home, we’ve spent our first couple of weeks learning about firetrucks, the story of creation from the book of Genesis, and working on recognition and sounds of the lowercase letters a through f. All of our projects focused on the story of creation.
The first project involved making one of God’s creatures. For simplicity, mom chose for them and decided a spider was the easiest route for this project. The kids painted their spiders, attached legs and then glued wiggly eyes onto their creatures.
Next, they created a mobile of “God’s Lights” in the sky, i.e. the sun, moon and stars.

| Mr X was too preoccupied to hold up his completed mobile so Isa held it for him. Isa's is on the left w/ the blue string. |
And finally they each created their own miniature versions of the garden of Eden complete with Adam, Eve and the tree of forbidden fruit.

We also spent some time this past week working on matching with pattern boards and blocks. Miss Isa likes this activity and has been doing particularly well at matching games these past couple weeks.
So that gives you a look at some of the things we’ve been up to the last couple weeks. With how much the kids have learned in that short time, it certainly feels like it’s been longer than a mere two weeks. In closing, here are a couple candids from one of our recent playground playdates.
