Closing Out the Month of October

As usual we’ve been keeping plenty busy, so much so that I really didn’t even know where I’d left off on updates here. We skipped a week of school to save the letter J for the last week of October so that we could focus on J for Jack-o-lanterns. The chilly weather lately has it really feeling like fall now…winter almost!

A couple weekends ago we took the kids to the annual Children’s Day Fest. The weather was perfect, cool and sunny with a mild breeze. Isa went on her first pony ride and absolutely loved it. In fact, it was all she talked about the rest of the day. She didn’t want to do anything else except the pony ride. It left such an impression that she still talks about riding the horsey to this day. I told daddy she needs her own pony! Ha! So in addition to doing the pony ride twice, she also got her face painted and rode one of the rides with mom and her brother. There was a lot to do but the kids were wiped out after only a couple of hours.

She got a sea turtle painted on her face.

Later that week we went to Babygarden at the library for our second time. None of my photos of the kids came out well, but here’s the cute little project we made that day.

The following week the kids wore Halloween costumes to Babygarden which was super cute. They also made footprint ghosts for their weekly Babygarden project.

Isa sported fairy wings & Mr X wore a Tigger costume.

Halloween week we focused on Halloween/fall activities for our school work. We started out the week with a fall leaf activity. First, we searched the backyard for a variety of fallen colored leaves. Then we made leaf rubbing imprints of those leaves on paper.

After that, we played a matching game where Isa matched the leaf with its imprint on the paper. She had a lot of fun with this activity.

Mr X keeps himself plenty busy exploring everything in the house. Of particular interest are the moving objects…in this particular case, Dakota.

Isa’s next project involved making a spider web out of glitter. Mom helped with the glue and Isa followed up with the glitter application. Boy does this little girl love glitter!

Our letter J activity involved pumpkin seeds, so first we needed to carve the pumpkin to harvest its seeds.

After the seeds were washed and dried, she glued the pumpkin seeds to her letters of the week.

Her final project for the week involved painting pumpkins with her fist.

Adding stems with her thumb.

Halloween day we went to the nearest county park for a meet up with some fellow homeschoolers. Isa had a lot of fun playing, sliding, swinging and chasing squirrels. The squirrels at the park expect handouts and are very bold, so Isa had a blast chasing them. In hindsight, I should have taken a picture...maybe next time.

Halloween night we took the kids out trick-or-treating. This was Isa’s first time ‘officially’ trick-or-treating. She went with her friend from next door and the two of them had a blast. While Mr X wasn’t able to join in the fun this year, he went along for the ride and got quite a bit of attention.

And, like I did last time, I’ll close with a couple of kid candids from this past week.

Mr X decided to climb onto the dishwasher door and help himself to the dirty dishes.

And last, but not least, here’s Isa enjoying a post-Halloween cookie.
